Information Literacy(Lab)

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

For me, knowledge is power because it is the most powerful, influential, and potent factor of humans. It holds more power than physical strength because knowledge is above everything. Through knowledge, we are able to make informed, careful, and wise decisions. Knowledge does not only limit to the information we gain from books for it comes from our own experiences.Unlike our physical strength, there is no end to knowledge. There is no limit to what a person can learn. The more knowledge we have, the more educated we get, the more power we contain in solving bigger problems.
IMPORTANCE OF GIVING CREDIT TO THE SOURCE OF ONES WORK

It is very important to acknowledge or give credit to the source of one’s work. This is because it is simply a sign of respect to the creator of the idea or the work itself. If one doesn’t give credit to the source of a work he just copied, it can be implied that he claims to be the creator or the owner of the work which would mean that he is stealing the idea or the work, even if he doesn’t have any intentions in doing so. This then has corresponding legal implications pertaining to copyright. In addition, acknowledging the author of an idea or a work would improve the credibility of one’s own work.

ESSAY ABOUT AN INFORMATION LITERATE INDIVIDUAL
An information literate individual simply refers to a person who have enough skills and competencies which allow him to efficiently engage in activities concerning information. A person who is an information literate demonstrates responsible use of information – conveying, sharing, and transmitting. In order to be an information literate, one must know when information is needed, where to locate it, and how to evaluate the truthfulness and falsity of an information being disseminated. Being an information literate is very crucial especially with the technology we have today that allows anyone to create information in just as easy as one click, which then imposes a threat in the validity of all information disseminated through media.

INTERNET OF THINGS

DEFINITION:

Internet of things - Simply put, this is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from cellphones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of. (Retrieved from https://www.forbes.com/sites/jacobmorgan/2014/05/13/simple-explanation-internet-things-that-anyone-can-understand/#6d9aa6f41d09)

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. (Retrieved from http://internetofthingsagenda.techtarget.com/definition/Internet-of-Things-IoT)

QUESTIONS:

Search for the meaning of the INTERNET OF THINGS and answer the following questions:

a)    In your own words, define Internet of Things

Internet of Things pertains to the connection and network of different devices, platforms, and objects entrenched with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity which enable them to connect and transfer data with or without human interaction.

b)   What brought this theory about?

It was as early as 1982 when the concept of a network of smart devices was first discussed, with a modified Coke machine at Carnegie Mellon University becoming the first Internet-connected appliance, being able to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold. On 1991, Mark Weiser's seminal paper on ubiquitous computing, "The Computer of the 21st Century", as well as academic venues such as UbiComp and PerCom produced the contemporary vision of IoT. The concept of the Internet of things became popular in 1999, through the Auto-ID Center at MIT and related market-analysis publications. Furthermore, it was Kevin Ashton of Proctor & Gamble, one of the creators of Auto-ID Center, who created this theory and eventually started to expand it through his connections.

c)    Do you like the concept of IoT ? Why or why not?

I do like the concept of the Internet of Things. IoT indeed, makes our lives easier and more convenient for us to live in. It will save our time and effort which allows us to be more productive than ever. This will certainly help us in different aspects – faster production and faster connections which will eventually lead to the growth and development of our community and our economy. However, there is a disadvantage that the concept implies. It will definitely be abused and misused by others, as some people will rely more on the “connection”, and not their own effort. This results to the dependence of people to machines and devices which then is the root of the lazy revolution of the human race. Also, our privacy is at risk. As our technology continues to develop, access to human lives are getting bigger as well which is a major threat in our security.

d)   In what situations do you encounter IoT in the Philippines?

I encounter IoT in the Philippines almost every day when I engage in communication and convey and share information through the use of the Internet.

e)   How do you think IoT will evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?

In the next three to five years, I think that IoT will greatly impact the Filipino society. People will be more dependent on the Internet of Things. In line with this, it can be said that we can become more efficient in our information and technological explorations than before. Moreover, production, communication, and connection will be doubled and will become faster which will absolutely help us economically and technologically.

f) What do you think is the relationship /cause and effect of IoT in media and information literacy?

Internet of Things and Information Literacy meets when it comes to transmission of information. Internet of Things helps media to be more accessible, therefore allowing information to be conveyed, shared, and distributed easily.

Information Literacy (Lecture)

MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN YOUR LIFE

When talking about who is the most influential person in my life, my answer, without any hesitations, is my mother. She has been with me since the very first day of my existence – the day that I was first formed inside her womb. I have realized that she is the most influential person in my life ever since I was a child. Up until now, she has done everything to make the world a better place for me to live in. She has always been my teacher, my friend, and my mentor. She influences me almost in every aspect of life – perspective towards different things, values, decisions, beliefs, and the like. Whenever I am down, she does her best to lift me up. She always supports me on my endeavors very much. Most importantly, she reminds me how to remain strong despite of all the problems and challenges that life brings.

TYPHOON
“According to the weather forecast, there is no typhoon. However, your locality is experiencing heavy rainfall, while some parts in your province /region are already flooded. There are reported incidents of landslide, evacuation, stranded vehicles and drowning. As a student, what are you going to do?”

STAGES/ELEMENTS
RESPONSES
Information needs
What information do you need?
The pieces of information I need are the happenings around my community. I need to know what the state of my community is in at the moment. In order to know these, I need to observe the intensity of the rainfall, the parts of my province which are already flooded, and other areas which might have been affected by the heavy rainfall.
Sources of Information
Where will you get them?
I will get information from the news update on the television, observations of people posted in different social media websites and my very own observations as well.
Access to the information
How will you access them?
I will access them through engaging in different social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. Also, watching news updates on the television will help me access information.
Evaluate information
How will you check the quality of information?
I will take into consideration the credibility and reliability of the sources of information. In addition, I will make sure that there will be accurate evidences to support the observations being said.
Organize information
How will you organize and store them?
The most efficient way to store and organize the information is to take pictures and to capture videos of the happenings during the actual heavy rainfall.
Communicate information
How will you create and communicate them?
I will create and communicate them through posting and sharing them in different social media websites. Another way is to inform our local barangay by calling the official hotlines of agencies and authorities concerning the situation.
